UNYX
The Google Ads modules

How do you know what your Performance Max campaign is really doing?

Performance Max takes an enormous number of decisions for you and shows very little of them. Many advertisers put a large share of their budget into it without being able to say simply what is working.

Why this happens

  • The campaign covers several networks at once, with a single report that hides their differences.
  • Asset groups are not compared with each other by default.
  • The audience signals provided at the start are almost never revisited.
  • Part of the budget can concentrate on a handful of products without showing at first glance.

How to check it yourself

These checks are done directly in your Google Ads account, with no tool at all.

  1. 1Compare spend and conversions asset group by asset group, not only at campaign level.
  2. 2In the products report, sort by spend: concentration is often high.
  3. 3Check the creative coverage of each group: a group short on visuals is served poorly.
  4. 4Look at the trend over several weeks: Performance Max takes time to settle.
What UNYX does

UNYX lays out the structure and performance of your Performance Max campaigns and highlights what is concentrating the budget, within what the Google Ads API actually exposes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see everything inside a Performance Max campaign?

No, and be wary of anyone promising otherwise. Google does not expose everything through the API: some breakdowns stay aggregated. What is accessible is still enough to spot concentrations and weak groups.

Should Performance Max be separated from Search campaigns?

That is a structural decision, not a rule. What matters is knowing what each campaign actually brings, otherwise one may simply take credit for the other's work.
